“W-O-W! This truly unique set of books is a literary portal to the extraordinary by an artist who lived it - like no other. Wayne unleashes a beautiful trilogy that is masterfully done. It’s insanely insightful and awe-inspiring on so many levels. The material is a must for anyone who performs magic and the boxed set will grace any bookshelf. Great job, brother!" — Criss Angel
"Wayne has one of the greatest minds in magic, and this new three-book set is absolutely sensational. It's essential reading for anyone who loves magic." — Andy Nyman
My friend Wayne Dobson has (once again) done the unthinkable. He has released all of his material. Yes, all—even that one. Yes. Everything. To say that the resulting three volume set is beautiful is a distinct understatement. For me this is not just beautiful, it’s inspirational. I hope that someday I can come close to doing what Wayne has done. Except the MS part. - Mac King
Well, it’s finally landed. My legacy – a 1000+ word trilogy in a gorgeous boxed set.
I’m unspeakably proud of this: beyond thrilled. Roget’s Thesaurus does not contain enough superlatives to express how I feel this morning. It’s the best I’ve ever been represented in print. I know I’m hardly objective, but I think this must comprise one of the most impressive pieces of the publisher’s craft for many years: and that’s down to people other than me.
One or two people have asked whether it’s a compendium of old material. The answer is a definitive no; it comprises three giant volumes:
Volume 1: Memoirs – my life story, from 5th July 1957 when I entered the world (I couldn’t walk then either) right up to 2022. This is my life story: warts and all, bad times alongside the good, high points next to the lowest of the low. Over a five year period, on Skype most days, Bob Gill interviewed me skilfully teasing the facts, reminiscences and the anecdotes out of me. Along the way we laughed every day, sometimes I’d be in tears, but it has been a very special period in my life.
Volume 2: TV & Live Material – for the first time I’ve explained in nut-crushing detail the material that made me a star; the routines I used on my three prime-time TV series, on stage, in the clubs and on my unparalleled, box office breaking UK full illusion show that was a critical and public success and a commercial disaster; it cost me a great deal of money (not to mention my first marriage) to take such an ambitious show on the road. Such is the price of a celebrity ego! Bob even persuaded me to include full insights into my signature Voices routine. As a clue to how hard bob had to work me, when he initially asked me how the Voices worked, my reply was, “I dunno: I just did it”. But gradually, over several weeks, he got the detail out of me, and it’s one of my highlights of this rich collection.
Volume 3: New material – this is new material, either never-before described, or vastly improved variations on published or marketed material. This could have comprised over 200 routines; in selecting the final line-up we applied a simple test: if I was still working today, live or on screen, would I include the routine?
Here’s the story.
Five years ago I contacted my friend of 40 years, Bob Gill, to explore whether he’d work with me writing up my new releases; I’d had the idea to put out written instructions, as my mentor Ken Brooke had, rather than the filmed tutorials which I grew to hate; they made buyers just copy what they saw on screen. Written instructions, which is how we baby boomers learned, made you put so much of yourself into it: a bit like the difference between television and radio, the latter making you use your imagination to conjure up a more involving experience, while the TV version does all the imagining for you.
In passing, I asked him if he’d be prepared to edit two thousand words or so I’d put together about my life story. Four years on and the first volume of this trilogy, amassing 375 pages, was the result.
I owe Bob a level of gratitude I can never express. For his patience, his generosity, his professionalism, his skills, his love and care. Imagine looking for a gifted wordsmith who combines an encyclopaedic knowledge of magic with a fantastic instinct for comedy, then discovering that one of your long-term friends from the 1970’s combines all those attributes – and is prepared to devote over four years of his life to bringing your story to life. I love the way he makes this school drop-out/sock factory worker sound. He gets magic, he gets comedy, but above all he gets me. And in the process I’ve forged the closest of friendships, which is perhaps the most rewarding outcome of this effort.
I’m also grateful to Andi and Josh at Vanishing Inc. They are without doubt the foremost magic publishers in the world, and they rolled the red carpet out in their enthusiasm for this project. I keep staring at the sumptuous box set on my desk, and it is a mesmerising homage to purple! This thing weighs as much as a breeze block, such is the quality of the paper and board they’ve employed. These guys are an absolute delight to work with; indulgent, thoughtful, but always unrelenting in the quality they insist upon. Without their guiding hands this would not have been the same project - and a far inferior one at that.
I could go on, and on, and probably will over the coming weeks and months, for which forgive me in advance. Some of the early comments from the true legends in magic have brought a tear to my eye. Go over to Vanishing Inc.’s site, or by all means take a trip to DTrik if you’d rather buy it from us. Either way, I’m relaxed: just buy it!
Ken (Brooke), Mary (Fisk), Mum: if, as I hope, you’re looking down, I just hope you can be proud of what this ruffian from Leicester has produced.
All my love,
A proud, smiling
Wayne
